Some people consider and attempt various solutions to relax before a hair removal treatment, particularly if they are nervous about the appointment, or have any negative expectations of discomfort. One such home remedy for anxiety is alcohol, with many people presuming that having a drink to ‘loosen up’ before an appointment is a good idea. While it may be tempting to have a glass of wine or a cocktail before undergoing a waxing treatment, it is actually far from it and may result in a negative experience or ineffective results.

Why can’t I drink before my appointment?

Alcohol, similarly to caffeine, is known to be largely acidic and inflammatory in the human body. Due to this, consumption in excess has a negative effect on the body’s acidity levels; negatively affecting pain thresholds, recovery time, and bodily reaction to stimulation and injury. While consumption in excess is never a good idea, it is also ill-advised to have even a small amount of alcohol before your appointment. With alcohol having the additionally-negative side effect of thinning the blood, having a drink prior to a waxing appointment may make you more likely to experience bruising, discoloration, or increased skin sensitivity.

Can I drink alcohol after my waxing appointment?

Yes! There is no research to suggest that having an alcoholic drink after a waxing treatment is particularly detrimental to the effectiveness or results of your wax. However, keep in mind that alcohol is dehydrating, and consumption may result in puffiness, water retention, and dehydration. Therefore, we recommend that you drink responsibly for both your personal health, as well as the health of your skin.
